Illicit brew makers in Boronyi sub-location, Kisii county, have formed a self-help group to help fight the brew.
Area Chief Richard Nyabuto said 18 brewers have abandoned the business and engage in businesses.
Nyabuto said some of the brewers left the business following a spirited campaign to destroy their tools of trade, adding that some are selling foodstuff such as bananas and beans.
Speaking during the election of the group’s officials at Boronyi Assistant Chiefs camp, he said the group would be assisted to access public funds to diversify their activities to boost their welfare.
Kisii University chaplain-cum-Nyanza National Campaign Against Drug Abuse (Nacada) coordinator, Father Lawrence Nyaanga and the group’s advisor, Wilson Ondieki said they would conduct a funds drive to help the reformed brewers to make the area an alcohol-free zone.
During the elections, Jared Omanga was elected chairman, Mary Bundi, vice chairman, Peter Bichuri, Secretary, Dorca Kebiro, Vice Secretary and Jack Kemunto, Treasurer.
