Former Planning Permanent Secretary Dr Edward Sambili has asked the government to thoroughly assess the 8-4-4 system of education before scrapping it.
He said instead of changing the system, the content should be overhauled. Changing the system, he argued, was a very expensive and a delicate affair that needs to be handled meticulously and with sobriety.
Speaking at Emening trading centre in Mogotio sub-county, the former Central Bank of Kenya Deputy Governor maintained that there was no justification to scrap the system of education, as it had served the country well for more than 30 years.
“If you go to UK or US, they are using the same system of education they have used for the last 100 years or even more, and therefore there is really no justification for Kenya to rush for a new system,” he reiterated.
Sambili, who is currently a university lecturer, said to make the country’s education more applicable to the current world, it was imperative to do away only with some areas, which are no longer useful to learners.
“Let us pursue the system with revised content, and this should be a continuous process. We can do away with areas which are becoming redundant, but the system should remain,” the former PS said.
He argued that Kenyans pursuing the current system were securing admissions to prestigious universities, while others were doing exceptionally well in the competitive job market.
He said people should not blame the 8-4-4 system for their failures to implement the curriculum of the system as per the set intentions of its developers.
