Commission chairman Johnston Kavuludi

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has warned of interference with the ongoing police reforms in the country. The commission chairman Johnston Kavuludi said the process of reforming the police service must be allowed to go on uninterrupted by any quarters.

Though Kavuludi did not mention specific names, it was not lost that his comments came only a day after the Interior Cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery made a scathing attack on the commission, which he fell short of calling for its dissolution. Nkaissery was quoted in a section of the media saying that the commission has usurped the work of the Inspector General of Police and his deputies.

The CS said he does not believe in the current vetting exercise of police officers as he cast aspersions on the ability of the commission that he said comprises civilians. Nkaissery voiced opposition to the commission’s decision to focus on the wealth acquired by the officers and accused the commission of vetting officers who have served for so many years instead of only going for those who have been in the service for a short stint.

But Kavuludi yesterday said the transition process in the police service including vetting of police officers is well spelt out in the new Constitution and hence it must not be subjected to negative criticism from the public.
