Political leaders allied to the Jubilee coalition have called for national unity ahead of next year’s General Election. Devolution Cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, Kiambu governor William Kabogo and his Nyandarua counterpart Waithaka Mwangi said leaders should desist from activities that disrupt peace and further urged Cord leaders to uphold the law in their push for reforms.

The remarks were made yesterday on the sidelines of a national prayer meeting convened by Akorino faithful at Kasarani Sports Centre Nairobi. “Nobody is afraid of elections. As leaders, we should desist from actions and activities that may disrupt peace.

Push for reforms should be in accordance with the law, not only about IEBC but all other issues,” said Kiunjuri. Others present including Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, Kieni legislator Kanini Kega and affirmed that the government is committed to have all the necessary reforms undertaken through the legally biding process.

Yesterday’s prayer meeting brought together a congregation of more than 15,000, setting pace for the next year’s event. Kabogo pledged a donation of Sh500,000 in support of next year’s prayer meeting and an additional Sh600,000 on behalf of Deputy President William Ruto.

The Kiambu governor also seized the opportunity to downplay his recent controversial statement on Mt Kenya’s region support for Ruto in 2022. “Those who wanted to create a rift between the Deputy President and I have failed. We are one nation and we are working very closely,” he said.

Sonko pledged Sh800,000 while Nairobi governor aspirants Dennis Waweru and Bishop Margaret Wanjiru committed to donate Sh300,000 and Sh200,000 respectively. Meanwhile, drama unfolded yesterday at Kasarani Sports Center when Waweru and Wanjiru clashed in public during Akorino prayer rally meeting.

Wanjiru angrily pushed Waweru’s hand off her during the introduction of leaders. “I know Waweru does not want me to talk because I am vying for Nairobi gubernatorial post. Leaders cannot talk for one minute,” she said. In a quick rejoinder, Waweru told Wanjiru off saying there should be separation of roles urging her to continue with priesthood.

“I am very thankful to Bishop Wanjiru, she has already campaigned for me and asked Akorino’s to vote for me. However, I urge her to continue preaching while we play politics,” said Waweru.
