Nairobi senator, Mike Mbuvi Sonko.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has written to Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro to have parliamentary privilege insulating Senator Mike Mbuvi alias Sonko from prosecution be lifted to allow Kidero seek legal redress.

Kidero, who moved to clear his name over murder allegations made by Sonko in Parliament last week, said the senator was on a smear campaign to discredit the county government’s process of revenue collection.

“I request that the wild and defamatory allegations made by Senator Sonko against me be expunged from the records as they are extremely defamatory and total abuse of the hallowed parliamentary privilege accorded to him. They were made without any substantiation whatsoever,” he said.

The governor added that he may consider seeking Supreme Court interpretation on the matter should he be dissatisfied with the actions of the Senate on the letter which was also copied to the Attorney General, chairs of Council of Governors and Public Accounts and Investments committee.

“In the meantime I am afraid that I will not honour Senate summons before the issues I have raised are addressed and the security and dignity of myself and the other county officials is assured,” he said.

The two are alleged to have exchanged blows at a Senate Public Accounts Committee session where Kidero was being quizzed over the county’s financial spending for the 2013/14 financial year.
