A 102-year-old grandmother has been spending the night in the cold since Friday after hired goons demolished her mud-walled house to evict her from land desired by a private developer in Nakuru county.

The victim, Wangari Nyokabi, stood no chance against the ruthless and energetic youth armed with a court order and escorted by police to throw her out of a five-acre land at Miti Moja area that she called home for 33 years that is now claimed by Alice Chemng’etich.

Speaking to the press, Nyokabi said she acquired the land in 1983 and accused Chemg’etich of using underhand means to render her homeless, adding that the police and youth who descended on her home callously tossed her and her personal belongings out of the house before demolishing it.

The plight of Nyokabi, who is now sheltering her frail bones from the chilling cold under a makeshift polythene shelter provided by sympathetic neighbours, has sparked anger in the area. They have called on National Land Commissioner Mohammed Swazuri to help Nyokabi get back her land.

According to her daughter, Marion Nyokabi, police officers harassed and threatened to use excessive force to ensure the granny gives up the land to Chemng’etich.

She said their bid to fight for the land through the court has left both “emotionally and financially drained” in last five years the matter has been pending in the corridors of justice.
