A university student accused of giving false information to two senior police officers was yesterday charged in a Nairobi court with the offences after being found fit to stand trial.
Wicklif Ouma Ochieng who has accused Nairobi ODM chairman George Aladwa of recruiting some youths to be militias in Southern Sudan to assist Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) leader Raila Odinga to overthrow the government denied the charge before Milimani Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo.
The accused also denied giving false information that Prof Bernard Njoroge, a deputy vice- chancellor at the University of Nairobi was planning to assassinate Vice-Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi.
The accused pleaded to the charges after senior State Counsel Eddie Kadebe informed the court that the accused has undergone a mental assessment as earlier ordered by the court and the report shows he is fit to stand trial.
On Tuesday Ochieng appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Joyce Oluoch, but did not plead to the charges and was ordered to be taken to Kenyatta National Hospital for mental assessment before pleading to the charges against him.
The court heard that on February 1, 2016 at Langata Directorate of Criminal Investigations office in Nairobi county, he informed Chief Inspector Fatuma Ali Hadi that one Omondi Karori and Aladwa had recruited him and others to be trained as militias in Southern Sudan, jointly with Riek Machar forces to assist Raila overthrow the Government after 2017 General Elections.
This information, the prosecution said, the accused knew or believed to be false intending the said police officer to open investigations into the alleged recruitment and training of the militias, report which she ought to have done if the true state of facts was given.
The second count states that on May 17, 2016 at Nairobi county Criminal Investigations office, he gave false information to Inspector Joseph Muchai that one Prof Njoroge, the deputy vice chancellor University of Nairobi was planning to assassinate Professor Mbithi the vice chancellor of the same university.
The police claim that on May 23, 2016 Prof Mbithi recorded a statement with the police, saying that some students and staff from the university have been meeting and planning on how to assassinate him.
The magistrate ordered the accused released on a bond of Sh300,000 or a cash bail of Sh30,000.
The case will be heard on August 3, 2016.
