President Uhuru Kenyatta will officially launch the construction of Ngong Road in Nairobi to a dual carriage way on Monday.
The project is a joint venture between the government and the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) grant aid of Sh1.5 billion.
“Once construction is complete, it is envisioned that the project will secure safe and smooth traffic on the west side of Nairobi and the Central Business District (CBD) area. It will also reduce transportation cost by alleviating traffic congestion and secure convenience and safety of pedestrians by setting up sidewalks,” read a statement from Jica.
It would also involve erection of street lights and traffic signals and provide a central median that will be transformed into a bus rapid transit system in future.
The construction of the first phase began in April after a Japanese firm World Kaihatsu Kogyo (WKK) won the tender early in the year for its construction.
The first phase will cover a 2.6 kilometres distance from the Kenya National Library to Ring Road junction in Kilimani.
The dualling of the road is part of government’s efforts to decongest the city and will run alongside the improvement of the Outer Ring Road in Nairobi’s Eastlands area into a super highway.
