KNCHR chairperson Kagwiria Mbogoria

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHRC) has raised the red flag over increased loss of lives to insecurity in the country.
Statistics released by the commission indicate that more than 1,800 people have been shot dead in crime-related incidents since 2010. The same period also saw 180,000 persons displaced by terror attacks and record 277 deaths.

KNCHR chairperson Kagwiria Mbogoria said yesterday insecurity has manifested in various ways especially in hotspots regions such as the North Rift and North Eastern Kenya.

Speaking ahead of a public inquiry on perennial insecurity, Mbogoria said insecurity has claimed lives of approximately 1,000 people—both civilian and law enforcement officers. She said the commission seeks appropriate redress measures for victims and survivors.

The public hearings will be conducted in three phases, with the first set for North Rift on May 10, followed by Coast and Northern Kenya.
KNCHR vice chairman George Morara said the commission has the mandate to monitor State and non-State actors to ensure they comply with both national and international laws on human rights.
