More than 200 unapproved buildings in Nairobi have been earmarked for demolition.
Out of 2601 buildings inspected by the Department of Public Works, 266 were found to be unsafe for habitation and will be demolished.
National Construction Authority (NCA) building inspectorate secretary Moses Nyakiongora said:”We are planning to demolish more buildings that have not complied.”
However demolition of condemned buildings has been hampered by lack of requisite laws, admitted Nyakiongora.
Last year, Nairobi County Members of County Assembly shot down a motion seeking the introduction of a bill that would have given City Hall power to demolish unapproved buildings.
