Mount Kenya University (MKU) has signed a deal with China University of Petroleum to tackle structural engineering skills gap in the oil and gas sector.
MKU chairman Simon Gicharu and the Dean College of International Education at China University Dr Fengchi Luan signed the deal yesterday, set to engage in students in joint scientific and technological research projects.
Gicharu said the partnership will develop academic cooperation to promote relations and mutual understanding for the two institutions of higher learning.
“This deal spells a bright future for our students and faculty. Kenya, and indeed Africa, is replete with natural resources but lacks manpower to tap these resources,” he said.
Under the agreement, the two institutions will jointly promote and develop academic cooperation, exchange teaching staff and research personnel.
China University of Petroleum is one of the best institutions of learning in petroleum-related studies in Asia.
Last year, MKU opened a campus located Lodwar in oil-rich Turkana county, making it the first university to be established in the vast, resource-rich area of north Kenya.
