Kenya has affirmed its opposition to the illegal trade in ivory with President Uhuru Kenyatta declaring that the government will be lobbying for a total ban on ivory trade at the forthcoming convention on international trade in endangered species- cites to be held in Johannesburg South Africa in Septemer.
Kenyatta who spoke ahead Saturday's historic burning of Kenya's biggest ever stockpile of ivory and other game trophies said the provision which allowed countries to sell their stockpiles of ivory was impeding efforts to protect the world's elephant population.
The president made the statement during the official opening of the Giants Club Summit in Nanyuki which was attended by Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni and Omar Bongo of Gabon .
