Mandera county leaders want the government to halt the ongoing operation to flush out al-Shabaab insurgents. Lafey MP Abdille Farah said the operation along Arabia and Sheikh Barrow was targeting innocent residents instead of suspected militants. He was reacting to the killing of five people whose bodies were found in a shallow grave in Fino.
“We are tired of torture inflicted by al Shabaab at night and security forces operation during the day,” said Farah. Speaking at Wilson Airport on arrival from Mandera after herders in Fino discovered five bodies, Economic Freedom Party gubernatorial aspirant Hassan Noor Hassan accused security forces of executing the five.
“Government agencies are responsible for the deaths as part of a crackdown on extremism,”said the former Rift Valley PC. Noor blamed the police for the deaths saying officers are only interested in torturing people and not enhancing security in the area. “What has happened is sad for the people of Mandera. We cannot accept security agencies to turn their guns on residents,” he said.
