Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has said the country’s security level is sound in the run-up to the General Election. Speaking yesterday while chairing a multi-agency security team at his office to review election preparedness, Boinnet allayed fears of possible post-poll violence as warned by the European Union election observers.
“We are here to review the level of preparedness before, during and after election. In our view and we have a very strong reason to believe so, we have done very well. We are satisfied with the arrangements put in place,” he said.
“We understand our country very well and we are fully prepared. Anyone acting in breach of the law will meet full sanction of the same,” Boinnet warned, adding that his officers will act in conformity with the law.
The police boss said the service is apolitical and will provide security to all Kenyans and political leaders impartially regardless of political affiliations. “Our single purpose is to ensure the election is held in a safe and secure environment,” he said.
The security meeting was attended by Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro, Deputy Inspectors General (Administration Police Service) Samuel Arachi and Kenya Police Service Joel Kitili, Director General of National Youth Service Richard Ndubai, Kenya Forest Service director Emilio Mugo and representatives from Kenya Prisons and Kenya Wildlife Service.
Boinnet denied existence of a police squad trailing the National Super Alliance (Nasa) flag-bearer Raila Odinga as claimed by Senator James Orengo. “Our job is to provide security to all including, Raila. He has a security team from the service. We are not aware and the same has not been brought to our attention.”
Meanwhile, Boinnet confirmed that AP officers who covered party nominations will receive their delayed Sh10,000 allowance. Although he termed the delay as technical, he affirmed the dues will be fully settled. “There was a technical delay but they will be paid in the next few days,” he said.
