The Government has Monday taken delivery of 12,000 tonnes of imported maize with an assurance that the current shortage of maize flour will be over in the next few weeks.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett who witnessed the offloading of the consignment at the National Cereals and Produce Board depot in Nairobi's Industrial Area said the maize will be distributed to all NCPB outlets countrywide by rail to ease the availability of the commodity.
Bett said the consignment which is part of 1.2m bags of maize already at the Port of Mombasa will boost the distribution of the commodity from the current 1,600 metric tones to 2,000 metric tones daily using railway transport.
Another consignment of 3.8m bags of maize is expected to begin arriving at the Port of Mombasa from Tuesday.
