Deputy President William Ruto’s wife Rachel Ruto yesterday led churches from different denominations in Nyamira county in prayers for peace ahead of the August 8 poll.
She urged Kenyans to embrace unity and shun politicians whose agenda is to divide them for selfish gains saying reckless utterances risk plunging the country into chaos.
Speaking yesterday at Uhuru Gardens, Mrs Ruto warned Kenyans to be wary of utterances and activities that might hurt the peaceful co-existence in the country, adding that the wounds of the 2007/08 post-election violence are yet to heal.
Rev Eliud Nyakundi who delivered the sermon, challenged Kenyans to seek and turn to God to ensure peace in the country saying “we are all one Kenyan family irrespective of our ethnic communities.”
He reminded Kenyans that after the elections, Kenya will still remain and therefore called for tolerance during campaigns. Mrs Ruto said there was need for churches to work with the government adding that a nation which does not give God room in its leadership was bound to fail.
She challenged churches to rise up and partner with the government in preaching for peace, unity and tolerance during these times of campaigns.
Nyamira Assembly Speaker Joash Nyamoko, Jubilee Party’s West Mugirango constituency candidate Charles Ongoto and Nyamira County Commissioner Albanus Ndiso also attended and called for peaceful campaigns.Mrs Ruto also took the prayer rallies to Narok and Bomet counties as she continued the countrywide initiative.
