The ongoing heavy rains have washed away sections of the Narok-Mai Mahiu road adversely affecting the flow of traffic. Motorists using the road have been put on high alert following increased cases of flash floods in the past week.

The warning comes two days after tens of motorists were stranded near Suswa town after a heavy downpour left sections of the road impossible. Motorists were forced to seek alternative routes while others got stuck in the mud. According to Naivasha sub-county commissioner Isaac Masinde, flash floods were as a result of heavy downpour in the nearby hills.

Masinde called on motorists to exercise caution when approaching the area to avoid possible loss of life. “Suswa is experiencing flash floods because of the heavy downpour in hilly areas surrounding the town.

We are urging motorists and residents to be on high aleart,” he said. The administrator noted that sand harvesting in quarries near the road may have contributed to sections becoming weak.

“We are asking sand harvesters to stop encroaching road reserves,” he said. The commissioner said they are working with other government agencies to maintain safety of motorists.

“We are sharing information with NTSA and Kenha to make sure flow of traffic is maintained and that we do not put lives of motorists and passengers to risk,” he said. Last week, two sand harvesters were killed and others seriously injured after a lorry ferrying sand was involved in an accident.
