A Christian organisation known as Global Union of Churches (GUC) on Friday launched a national campaign dubbed “National Peace Initiative” to sensitise Kenyans on the need for peace before, during and after the August General-Election 8.

The initiative is designed to educate and challenge Christians as agents of peace during the polls. The union has over 5,000 members.

Speaking during the launch, Bishop Dedan Muriithi called on Kenyans, especially politicians and their agents to safeguard the peace the nation enjoys at the momnt.

He appealed to the top leadership of the two leading political parties: Jubilee Party (JP) and the National Super Alliance (NASA) to promote peace in all their activities and ensure their followers do same.

“We call upon all political competitors both nationally and at the county levels to exercise restraint in order to foster national peace and integration and we shall expose any leader who propagates hate speech,” he said.

He urged clerics all over the country to use their positions as instruments of peace even when confronted by different opinions.

“Kenyans should be aware of the rare peace our country enjoys and and what it needs to flourish so that we can continue to shine among progressive nations,” he said.
