Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (Kusnet) wants Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to deploy qualified head teachers to special schools.

The union said it would resist posting of heads without special needs education training in the ongoing deployment.
In a letter to the TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, its secretary James Torome said the union welcomes teachers promotion but asks it to post more staff to special schools, claiming that for many years they have been understaffed.

"We expect TSC to be considerate and post qualified and adequate head teachers and teachers to these schools that have been neglected for long. We will resist deployment of personnel without special needs training," he said.

He faulted Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) for failing to set special examinations for special needs pupils and students last year yet it had been directed to do so by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"The candidates were subjected to normal examinations.

The decision by the council resulted in many candidates disadvantaged. Most failed to secure form one places in national schools and public universities," said Torome.

He, however, asked the council to set the examinations for them in this year's exercise, adding that salaries for teachers dealing with special needs pupils and students should be adjusted to reflect the hardships they face in discharging their duties.
"We forwarded the proposal to TSC three years ago and up to now nothing has been done," said the official.
