Deputy President William Ruto has chided the opposition for its pre-occupation with seeking power for self-glorification as opposed to serving Kenyans.
He said they had failed to name a presidential candidate to face Jubilee Party's President Uhuru Kenyatta because none of the four leaders — Raila Odinga (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Moses Wetang'ula (Ford Kenya) and Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) — under the National Super Alliance (Nasa) is willing to cede ground for the other.
Ruto said the four have no moral authority to lead the country because their main preoccupation is to share seats. “The four who had promised to name their candidate in their rally in Mathare have failed to do so and this was expected,” he said.
Speaking during a Jubilee rally in Kihoto grounds in Naivasha, the Deputy President defended government borrowing saying the funds had gone into various projects such as ongoing Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), roads construction and supply of electricity to hundreds of homes.
He said some of those in the Opposition had in their time in government borrowed funds to service payment for scams such as Goldenberg and Anglo Leasing in which individuals stole from the taxpayer through dubious schemes.
“Some of those in the Opposition used the borrowed funds to pay Anglo Leasing and Goldenberg and they do not have the moral authority to question our work,” he said.
Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, who joined Ruto at the rally urged Kenyans to re-elect Uhuru Kenyatta and her deputy to enable them to complete their projects. Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Aden Duale told off Wiper leader Kalonzo over his declaration that the opposition will have its own tallying centre terming it illegal.
“The law is very clear on the issue of tallying and its only the IEBC that is supposed to have a tallying station and no one else,” he said. Duale claimed that some governors had opened an illegal bank account where they were channelling county funds to finance the Nasa campaigns.
He said he has written to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption commission (EACC), the National Treasury and the Office of the Auditor General over the issue saying any governor who deposits fund in that account will be charged in court.
He claimed Raila was defending governors because they are financing his campaigns saying those diverting development funds for political campaigns were doing so at own peril.
The Naivasha rally was attended by, among others, MPs Samuel Arama (Nakuru Town West East), David Gikaria (Nakuru Town East), Kimani Ichung'wa (Kabete), Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati), Ferdinand Waititu (Kikuyu), Moses ole Sekuda Kajiado West), Samuel Gichegi (Kipipiri ) and Moses Kuria (Gatundu) and Mary Wambui (Othaya).
Others included Nominated Senator Liz Chelule and former Constitution Implementation Commission chairman Charles Nyachae. Area MP John Kihagi was conspicuously absent.
Governor Kinuthia Mbugua said Jubilee has fulfilled most of its pre-election pledges and managed to keep the country at peace. "Jubilee took over the reigns of power when there was uncertainty across the country but managed to hold the country together up to date," he said.
