A group of stakeholders has published a checklist of integrity and constitutional requirements for all elective seats aspirants ahead of the August 8 General Election.

In a paid-up media advert, the Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties published the mandatory (including academic and moral) requirements for all aspirants.

“The law has laid down rigorous requirements for any person aspiring for elective position to comply with,” read the statement in part. “It is the primary duty of the aspirants to ensure they have complied with all such requirements.”

Aspirants who fail to meet the requirements risk being disqualified from respective races or their election annulled despite having being nominated by their parties.

According to the statement, all hopefuls for various seats must not be subject to a sentence of imprisonment for at least six months or been found to have abused public office.

They are also not required to have been dismissed from public office for contravening constitutional provisions. But such aspirants could be pardoned from being locked out of the polls if they have appealed against their sentences or if their ongoing appeals have not been exhausted by a court of Law.

The statement is signed by Attorney General Githu Muigai, Wafula Chebukati for IEBC, Achbishop (rtd) Eliud Wabukala for EACC and the registrar of parties Lucy Ndung’u.
