Former Anti-FGM Board chairperson Linah Jebii Kilimo wants the government to recruit more police reservists and recognise their role in maintaining law and order in Kerio Valley.
Speaking on Saturday during the burial of David Kipyatich Kanda, a police reservist who was killed by cattle rustlers, Kilimo asked the government to equip the reservists to enable them to be more effective.
She added that families of reservists who lose their lives in the line of duty should be compensated.
Kilimo, who has declared interest in her former Marakwet East parliamentary seat currently held by Kangogo Bowen, asked the government to intensify the fight against cattle rustling.
She said it is the responsibility of the government to ensure all citizens are protected.
“It is sad that residents of Kerio Valley are living in constant fear because of cattle rustling. People in the valley need protection like other Kenyans,” said Kilimo.
She called for homegrown solutions to perennial lawlessness in the region.
The former Cabinet minister cautioned North Rift leaders against inciting residents to engage in acts of lawlessness.
She instead called for dialogue to resolve security challenges in the region for once and for all.
