As Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Ford Kenya counterpart Moses Wetang’ula battle for Luhya political supremacy, Cotu secretary general Francis Atwoli insists Luhyas will settle for one presidential candidate in 2017 election.
Speaking in Busia county, Atwoli said plans were under-way for a political rally at Kakamega to declare the community’s preferred presidential candidate. “Luhyas will have to unite and pick one strong presidential candidate. We shall hold our final rally at Kakamega to declare our candidate.
Other communities do not respect us because we are politically divided,” he said. Western Kenya region already has two declared presidential hopefuls with Mudavadi, who vied for presidency in 2013 and lost to President Uhuru Kenyatta says he is the best suited candidate from the region to floor the incumbent.
“I urge my brother Moses Wetang’ula to join me and support my bid. I am the eligible presidential candidate from the house of Mulembe who can battle out with Uhuru Kenyatta if given full Luhya support,” said Mudavadi. He cautioned the Cord co-principal to be wary of Raila Odinga who he said is not ready to leave the presidential ticket to any other person.
However, Wetang’ula, while launching his presidential bid in Kakakemga two weeks ago said he would stop at nothing to ensure he contests for presidency. “I have been crowned as the Luhya political kingpin and I will use the mantle to contest for presidency so that I can change the leadership of this country,” he said. Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who defected to Ford-Kenya, assured Western people that Wetang’ula would be picked as Cord presidential candidate.
