Somali police on Sunday publicly executed journalist Hassan Hanafi, who helped al Shabaab kill five fellow reporters. Reports indicate that a masked Hanafi was tied to a pole before government forces opened fire in a field at a police training camp.
“Today, the court fulfils the execution of Hassan Hanafi who had killed journalists,” Abdullahi Hassan, deputy judge of the court, told reporters at the scene. Hanafi, executed by the firing squad in Mogadishu, was sentenced to death last month after he was arrested in Nairobi’s Eastleigh while seeking medical attention before being extradited on request of the Somali government.
He worked for Radio Andalus, which is believed to be al Shabaab mouthpiece, before joining the armed wing of the terror group. He assisted the terror group by identifying possible targets amongst journalists between 2007 and 2011.
During his stay at the radio station, Hanafi would reportedly break all stories related to al Shabaab and would have exclusive interviews with the terror group. As a liaison officer for al Shabaab, Hanafi would summon all reporters deemed to report stories that portrayed the group in bad light. Some would later be found dead.
