The Employment and Labour Relations Court has found Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPPDU) officials in contempt of court. Justice Hellen Wasilwa yesterday ruled that the officials were guilty of disobeying the court orders and the court would not shy away from punishing them.

“The court has to safeguard the dignity of the law and the respondents have been found in contempt of court,” she ruled. She directed that they appear in court this Thursday for punishment.

The Council of Governors (CoG) moved to court on December 2, under a certificate of urgency seeking to stop the ongoing strike. Wasilwa declared the strike illegal and asked their unions to call it off. However, the doctors vowed to continue downing their tools whilst nurses’ talks through the Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun) were concluded.

Meanwhile, Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) has called for dialogue between President Uhuru Kenyatta and striking doctors to resolve the impasse that has crippled healthcare provision for over a fortnight.

Secretary general Francis Atwoli urged the president to personally intervene in the matter and initiate immediate dialogue with doctors to end the health crisis in the country and avoid deaths.
