Executive director Peter Kiama.

The Independent Medico-Legal Unit has demanded the interdiction of the officer in charge of a police operation in Mumias to recover guns stolen from a police station.

In a statement, executive director Peter Kiama said officers involved in the operation, which has been widely criticised for its brutality, operated against policing ethics and must be disciplined.

“We reiterate that in this case command and individual responsibility are primary towards accountability and justice for victims,” he said.

Kiama called on the government to take responsibility for the medical and psychological rehabilitation of victims of the brutality and issue a public apology to victims through the Inspector General.

Nearly 200 GSU officers were deployed to hunt down a gang that raided Booker Police Post and stole a cache of weapons last week.
