Stakeholders in the film industry yesterday called for a review of the Film and Stage Plays Act to enable adequate monitoring of content distribution.
Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi, Nest Arts Director George Gachara, who chairs the Committee of representatives in the Kenya film industry, said that there is need to review the Act (2012) in order to align it with the 2010 Constitution.
“This will help develop a dynamic and progressive film legislation which will effectively respond to the film sector interests,” Gachara said. Kenya Films Classification Board (KFCB) Chief Executive Officer Ezekiel Mutua said KFCB will work with relevant stakeholders towards the reviewing of the Act.
“We will work closely with the committee of representatives in order to preserve our national pride and identity,” said Mutua. The Committee of representatives is an organisation representing Riverwood, the Producers’ Guild, Script Writers’ Guild, GoDown Arts Centre, Sarakasi Trust, Bloggers Association of Kenya, Animation Association and Kenya Actors’ Guild.
