National Assembly Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso has said Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto was attacked by angry residents for storming and disrupting a meeting convened by Jubilee Women legislators.
She said Ruto had only himself to blame for what befell him after storming the meeting at Silibwet with rowdy youth adorned in his Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) party T-shirts to disrupt the meeting.
Laboso, the Sotik MP and Bomet governor seat aspirant, said the governor was not invited, but forced his way into the function, adding that police were forced to lob teargas canisters to disperse the rowdy youth, who did not want to leave the venue of the meeting.
“Ruto was not invited to our meeting and when he was told to leave the venue with his hired goons, he declined to do so forcing members of the public to push him and his youth out of the meeting,” she said.
Laboso said the governor was injured in the ensuing melee when police officers lobbed teargas canisters to contain the situation that was threatening to get out of control.
The Deputy Speaker spoke during the Jubilee Women for Women public rally at Apokor Polytechnic in Teso South Constituency, Busia where they were being hosted by area MP Mary Emase.
She urged women aspiring candidates in the country to conduct their campaigns for the 2017 General Election peacefully and desist from using abusive language against their opponents.
