The Kenya Union of Journalist (KUJ) has called for withdrawal of the proposed Films, Stage Plays and Publications Bill (KFCB), 2016 to pave way for consultation.
KUJ raised concerns that the Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) is a threat to press freedom, saying the bill seeks to extend the board’s mandate illegally.
KUJ now wants a reconstitution of the Board to rid it of ‘fundamentalists and extremists’ and have people who ‘understand how the dynamics of the industry are run.
Stakeholder’s debate
KUJ Secretary General Eric Oduor also said the board should convene a meeting with stakeholders to debate the Bill and strike a deal on acceptable legislations and that activities of the Board be reviewed to ensure it operates within the law.
“Failure to do so, KUJ will seek alternative measures to ensure the Bill is amended to reflect the wishes of stakeholders,” said Oduor.
