Hundreds of people living around the area where the Sh34 billion Itare dam is being built in Kuresoi, Nakuru county yesterday held a peaceful demonstration demanding compensation for displacement.
The residents were resettled by the government in the area in 2002 after they were evicted from Ndoinet forest to pave way for its rehabilitation. Armed with allotment letters, title deeds and twigs, the residents marched to the site where the construction has already begun.
They demanded that the project be stopped until their grievances are addressed. “We were told that the government will compensate us before the project commenced but they have started to evict us without notice,” said Richard Kipng’eno, a resident.
