The government has established an anti-microbial resistance assessment preceding surveillance system. Health Cabinet secretary Dr Cleophas Mailu said lack of proper surveillance systems coupled with other unscrupulous practices has exacerbated the situation on handling bacterial diseases.
The rise of drug resistant bacteria could reverse the gains made by medical science over diseases that were once treatable. Kenyans could be at risk of fatalities as a result if antibiotics potency is not preserved. With a population of more than 40 million, Kenyans could be at risk from a most unlikely source.
In Kenya, the bacterial infections that contribute most to human diseases are often those in which resistance is most evident. Antimicrobial Resistance, or AMR, is a scientific term that means antibiotics are losing their power to cure illnesses such as pneumonia, septic wounds and malaria.
