National Police Service Commission chairman Johnstone Kavuludi has urged traffic officers to respect and handle traffic offenders with dignity. During the vetting of a Nakuru-based Police Corporal Hellen Owala, Kavuludi read to her the guidelines under which an offender can be held.

“A traffic offender can only be held in custody if the offence is not punishable by bail or fine charges. That is if he has caused death, driving under influence of alcohol or without insurance cover.” Kavuludi said.

Owala narrated how she once saved Peter Wamoto, a director at NPSC, from an officer who frogmarched him to Nakuru Central Police Station after arresting him on the highway for speeding.

“Wamoto was once brought to Central Police Station for speeding by an officer who didn’t know him. I apologised to him on behalf of the officer and released him.” Owala said. Director Wamoto who was a member of the panel vetting her in a quick rejoinder thanked Owala for “saving” him from the hostile officer.

Kavuludi urged traffic officers to be considerate to reasonable circumstances leading to certain offences. “I rarely drive myself and when I do I sometimes exceed speed with a couple of kilometers. If I apologise and show remorse you can forgive,” he said.
