A president’s advisory committee on prison matters has raised concern over the increasing number of offenders being jailed over petty cases. Power of Mercy Advisory Committee (POMAC) wants the bail and bond terms to be of reasonable amount to address congestion in prisons.
Speaking during a visit to Nairobi West Prison yesterday, POMAC vice chair Regina Boisabi said congestion in penal institutions is partly linked to the increasing number of petty offenders.
“As a committee, we are not mandated to deal with decongestion of correctional facilities but this is proving to be a problem,” she said. POMAC secretary Michael Kagika said there is need for the judicial system to undergo scrutiny over its processes, citing that some innocent people are in prisons for undeserved rulings.
“Such people are encouraged to apply for the Power of Mercy but this is a matter that needs to be looked into urgently,” he said.
