A six-year old girl has died after her father allegedly beat her up and her one-year-old sister following a quarrel over a packet of milk.
The girls’ mother, Anna Nyambura, said her husband, Patrick Muiruri, attacked the children with a hammer after they drank some milk without sharing with him. She said the deceased, Jane Wambui, died on the spot at Tangi Tano area while the toddler is recuperating at Nairobi Women’s Hospital, Nakuru branch.
Speaking at the hospital, Nyambura said she had a quarrel with the husband on Friday evening after he demanded to drink the milk meant for children. He chased her from home and she left the children behind. “I did not think he would harm them when he ordered me to leave.
I left him with the children,” she said. Nyambura said the husband called her the following day, saying the older daughter fell sick and died.
“He thought he had killed them both and presented himself to Tangi Tano Police Station, but neighbours rescued the sister, who I never thought would make it,” she said. Muiruri’s mother, Mary Wanjiru, confirmed claims that her son killed his daughter.
Angela Gwaro, the officer-in-charge of the hospital where the one-year-old admitted, said the child is in a stable condition. The incident, which has shocked the village, comes in the wake of increased domestic violence cases across the country.
Last Sunday, an expectant woman set herself on fire over her husband’s alleged extra-marital affair. On the same day, a woman stabbed her husband to death in Maragua in a domestic quarrel.
Meanwhile, a man from Mwariki estate in Nakuru is being treated at Nakuru Level Five Hospital after he was stabbed by his wife on Monday night.
Florence Ngoya, the nursing officer in charge, said the patient identified as Kamau Njiru, was last year treated in the same hospital after he was attacked by the wife again.
