President Uhuru Kenyatta and Cord leader Raila Odinga are wrestling for strong and reliable political coordinators in the former Nyanza and Western provinces in preparation for the 2017 General Election.
Both leaders have already identified key political leaders they will work with to galvanise their political support in next year’s election. The People Daily has learnt that both Uhuru and Raila have held talks with various leaders from the grassroots to the county level and tasked them with various responsibilities.
Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong, and Kakamega’s Wycliffe Oparanya are leading the onslaught in seeking support for Raila in the former western province.
The duo has been tasked with mobilising resources that would help in campaigning for the Cord leader who is seeking to make his fourth stab at the presidency.
President Uhuru has also fronted Teso South MP Mary Emase and his Teso North counterpart Arthur Odera who were both elected on a United Republican Party ( URP) ticket to seek support from the Teso community.
Although he has publicly denied any links with Jubilee, Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba who recently resigned as ODM’s secretary general is also seen as one of the key campaigners of President Uhuru in the county.
In Mumias and Matungu constituencies, President Uhuru is working closely with area MPs Ben Washiali, David Were and former ODM youth leader Rashid Mohammed.
Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura, Rachuonyo’s James Rege and Ugenya’s David Ochieng are also said to be Uhuru’s coordinators in Luo-Nyanza.
In Kisii county, ODM senator Chris Obure, MPs Richard Onyonka and Samson Ogari are in Uhuru’s camp while Kitutu Masaba’s Timothy Bosire and Governor James Ongwae are leading the team supporting Raila.
In Migori county, Governor Okoth Obado and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed are in Raila’s camp while senator James Machage is said to be warming up to Uhuru.
