Fear has gripped men from the Turkana, Teso and Luo communities living in Trans Nzoia county after threats were circulated that they would be forced to undergo the ‘cut’ before the initiation season ends this month.
In the past week, more than 12 men from the Turkana community have forcibly faced the knife since Bukusu circumcision ceremonies kicked off in villages around Kitale town. Peter Emase, 33, from Kipsongo slum, said he is relocating together with his two sons after a group of Bukusu youth threatened to circumcise men in his family before the end of this month.
“At my age I don’t see the meaning of getting circumcised as I have been living like this for many years and my wife has not complained, “he said.
Speaking to the People Daily on phone, the county chief executive for health Isaac Kogo warned those forcing other to face the knife will face the full force of the law. He said that reports have indicated that many young people have been circumcised by unprofessional persons threatening their health.
“HIV can be easily be transmitted and that’s why we want to warn those who are castigating the exercise,” he said. Meanwhile, Bukusu Council of Elders county chairman Peter Masinde, while addressing journalists yesterday in Kitale said every group of people in the society has a role to play and no one should interfere with traditions the community has been observing for centuries.
