Bungoma boys skipping class to ready for ‘cut’.

Secondary and Primary School boys in Bungoma county who are scheduled to be circumcised this year have started deserting schools to practice for the festivals to be staged in August.

An estimated 10,000 boys aged between 10 and 14 are expected to undergo the rights practised among the Bukusu and Tachoni sub-clans of the Luhya in Bungoma, Kakamega and Trans Nzoia counties.

The county director of education Charles Anyika said joint efforts with the provincial administration were being made to stop the early practices so that majority of the boys in standards seven, eight and Form One do not desert schools.

“Our records show that the pupils performance in national examinations usually drop during circumcision years because candidates abandon schools before end of Term Two to prepare for the events,” he said.

The director pleaded with parents to also join the efforts by not allowing their children to go out at night for the practices because they could not concentrate when they report to school the following morning.
