The mother of the twin Kenyatta University sisters who perished in a road accident on Kilgoris-Kisii road last Friday yesterday saidshe had been robbed of her hope.

Inconsolable Racheal Nthiga said the two girls were her source of inspiration and hope and through educating them, she was sure one day they will change her life for the better.

The Getembe division Knut branch executive committee  member said the death could have been avoided if she had allowed them to accompany her to their cousin’s burial in Katharaka village in Tharaka Nithi county on the fateful day.  She said her family advised her not to go with them because they are too emotional.

Vienna Maragi and Valeria Monyangi died when a lorry collided with the vehicle in which they were travelling at Etora near Sameta in Bobasi sub-county, Kisii county. The accident also claimed six other people.

In Kisii, a sombre mood engulfed the morgue when their uncle, Evans Nyamwaro, viewed the bodies. He said the two were orphans whom they struggled to educate. “It is a tragedy and a great loss to our family. I am yet to come to terms with the reality,” he said.

Meanwhile, the weekend death toll from road accidents rose to 10 after two more people died following an accident involving more than  10 cars. The accident is said to have occurred after a  lorry driver lost control of the vehicle ramming more than 10 cars at Ndenderu, on the Eastern Bypass.

Traffic Commandant Jacinta Kinyua said police were on the ground to rescue the survivors.
