The squad dubbed “Linda – Rhino” will incorporate 250 soldiers from KDF, 60 from the American soldiers and 15 from the People’s Defence Forces of Uganda, and will be training in the next ten days in Laikipia Air Base and Archer’s Post region in Isiolo county.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Rachael Omamo noted that the special unit will be very instrumental in making sure that pilots are rescued and evacuated in a timely and professional manner from the enemy territory in case of such incidents.
Omamo added that the joint collaborative training between Kenya, USA and Uganda will equip the force with high class knowledge of such an operation, in light of the proximity of Kenya to Somali, the home of terror cells.
She further noted that cases of fighter jets being downed by terror groups like Al Shabaab need eminent rescue of the pilots.
US ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec assured his country has been in the forefront in knowledge sharing and offering of technical support to the war against terrorism and its cooperation with Kenya will continue.
This comes after a pilot whose jet was brought down by the Al Shabaab militia in Somalia is yet to be found.
