The outgoing Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has been appointed as a Commonwealth Special Envoy to Maldives to aid in bringing the political leadership in the country and assist in the process of constitutional and political transition.
His appointment by Secretary General of the Commonwealth Patricia Scotland is intended to support a sustainable political dialogue process leading to a stronger climate of pluralism and inclusive elections next year.
Speaking yesterday while delivering his farewell speech, Mutunga expressed commitment to spearhead and encourage the strengthening of democratic institutions and culture in the country.
Even as he accepted the new role in the foreign country, Mutunga warned that Kenya’s political leaders risk brining down national gains as they get preoccupied in parochial ethnic and jingoistic politics.
“I have taken this request and note, rather disturbingly that here in my motherland, if the political leadership is not self-restrained, will risk everything we have put in to build this country,” he said.
Mutunga called on politicians to shelve selfish and personal interests and engage in dialogue to continue maintaining peace and unity. He expressed hope the Judiciary will continue to play its rightful role to secure the Constitution and deepen nationhood.
Under his leadership, Mutunga said he has been able to attain significant transformation, both internal and external in ways that produces a big bearing on the quality of services offered by the institution.
