Two parliamentary committees have invited President Uhuru Kenyatta and Cord leader Raila Odinga to give their views on the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The two have been slotted to appear before the committees of Justice and Legal Affairs (JLAC)and the Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee (CIOC) on Tuesday.

MPs issued the summons as Council of Governors (CoG) called on the Opposition to halt anti-IEBC protests and embrace dialogue.

CoG chairman Peter Munya said governors were bipartisan on whether to disband the electoral body but said credibility  of the  commissioner  has been  at stake.

IEBC’s performance has been under attack with politicians questioning its ability to handle the 2017 elections.

Munya said a number of issues have been raised about the electoral body and credibility of the commission to conduct the forthcoming polls.

“As governors, we are keen to have a smooth General Election in 2017 in order to consolidate the major gains devolution has delivered for the people,” he said.

Munya said CoG will support initiatives that promote inclusive and bipartisan dialogue on the electoral process.

But speaking in Nairobi during a consultative meeting on elections, Raila maintained  that Cord will not halt the protests until a “set of conditions” is  met by the government.
