Police in Kikuyu, Kiambu county yesterday arrested five students from University of Nairobi , Lower Kabete campus after they reportedly staged series of armed raids in the area on Monday night.
A revolver with five bullets, several stones of bhang and five mobile phones were also recovered from the suspects who are being held at the Kikuyu Police Station ahead of their day in court. According to a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity, the suspects raided more than five homes in Lower Kabete where they terrorised owners before escaping with cash and electronic goods.
He said the gang first struck at about 4am with victims raising the alarm prompting the suspects to take cover only for them to strike again later.
The gang later went into their rented house at Lower Kabete shopping centre where they started fighting over the loot.
“One of them screamed and locals thought that it was another attack but when we went there in the company of police who had responded to our distress call, an officer smelled bhang and a search ensued,” he said.
Area police boss Birgen Kiptoo, while confirming the incident said the suspects were on police watch list following the increase of robberies in the area and environs.
He said it is unfortunate that students had turned into robbers and yet their parents had invested hundreds of thousands in their education.
