Considered a melting pot of Kenya’s politics, Nakuru Town is about to host a historic event – the President leading the nation to mark a national holiday outside the capital, Nairobi.

Hundreds of workers are working round the clock to ensure everything is ready for the marking of 53rd Madaraka Day (internal self-rule) celebrations to be presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Yesterday, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Wanyama Musiambo said Afraha Stadium, which has been given a facelift, is ready to host the President and his guests.

“National events have traditions and we are not about to break this… press briefings are done on the eve of the event so we will not give you all the details today,” he said.

Nakuru County Executive Member for Roads Joel Maina said the county was “proud to host such an historic event.”

A spot check by People Daily showed that major roads were being recarpeted.

“Our engineers are working day and night in the stadium to ensure the venue is ready on time,” Said Kairu.

Afraha Stadium has a capacity of 20,000. Security at the venue is tight. Entry to the stadium has been restricted.

Meanwhile, Nakuru county was on Monday trending on twitter under the hash tag #TembeaNakuru.
