Public Service and Youth Cabinet secretary Sicily Kariuki made an impromptu visit to the Eldoret Huduma Centre on Wednesday evening sending employees into panic.
The CS was shocked to find some workers attached to the centre absent from duty with the officer in charge having a difficult time explaining their whereabouts.
Even more shocking to Kariuki was that majority of the staff were not wearing uniform to distinguish them from members of the public seeking government services at the centre.
She, thus ordered the officer in charge to send her a detailed report over the matter and insisted that they should stick to their mandate as prescribed in the law.
“As government officials, we are mandated to provide services at our centres without fail, we are aware that the concept is still new but this does not give staff an excuse to underperform,” she said.
Kariuki, who was accompanied by Lugari MP Ayub Savula, after launching a National Youth Service Training Camp and several road projects in his constituency, raised concern over laxity among staff in public institutions.
Cost effective
She said the centres have continued to play an integral role in major regions and has become cost effective for citizens who would want to access services that were previously offered at the national level.
“Since the centres were established at the regional level, citizens can now apply for their national Identity Cards, register for groups, companies and apply for affirmative funds as well as seek advice, among other services without any problem,” she said.
