Search for missing tenants moves to Nairobi river

The hunt for missing occupants of the collapsed residential building in Huruma has been shifted to Nairobi River as 28 people remain unaccounted for. Incident commander Pius Maasai said the search and rescue efforts have been extended to the river, which was adjacent to the ill-fated building.

“We are searching the river to see if we can retrieve any bodies, ” he said. Yesterday, a multi-agency search of the river had commenced, with reports indicating the search will continue until the missing persons are accounted for.

By yesterday evening, 49 people had been confirmed dead, 47 reported missing and 140 rescued. Rescuers also managed to free domestic animals including nine rabbits, two geese, one turkey, and two cats from the rubble.

Maasai has urged residents of Huruma living in buildings earmarked for demolition to move to safe houses before the expiry of a seven-day graced period announced by Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.

On Saturday, Kidero suspended the demolition of condemned houses to allow occupants seek alternative accommodation. He said buildings earmarked for demolition will be destroyed next week in what is seen as a move not to irk his political support.
