Heavy rains pounding various parts of the country continue to wreck havoc, causing deaths and destruction of property in their wake. Four people have been confirmed dead and more than 4,000 displaced in Ilchamus ward in Baringo South sub-county following heavy rains that have caused flooding in many parts of Baringo County.

The most affected areas are Loropil, Salabani, Ilng’arua, Sintaan and Ng’ambo locations where residents have been left homeless spent the night in the cold. In Mombasa, an 11-year-old school boy died on Thursday after he was swept away by raging floods in Chaani area, Changamwe sub county.

Witnesses said the Standard Five pupil was attempting to cross a flooded trench on his way home from school when he slipped and fell into the raging water. In Naivasha, a police officer attached to the anti-stock theft unit drowned on Saturday evening after he was swept away by flood waters.

The body of the officer in his 20s was recovered on Sunday morning after rescue operations by his colleagues. In Nairobi, residents of sections of Westlands were left picking up the pieces after devastating floods destroyed property of unknown value and leading to the closure of Nakummat Spermarket, Ukay branch.

Following heavy rains on Saturday night, water swamped the basement of the supermarket, destroying goods prompting indefinite suspension of operations.

“Arising from the flash floods challenges experienced in parts of Nairobi and specifically at the Ukay Centre Shopping Mall in the Westlands business district, Nakumatt Holdings wishes to confirm the temporary suspension of operations at Nakumatt Ukay Supermarket,” said Regional Operations and Strategy Director Thiagarajan Ramamurthy.

Photos circulating on social media showed water gushing into the already flooded supermarket. In Isiolo, the county government evacuated more than 100 students who were stranded for four days in Bassa Cherab ward following floods in the region. —Reporting by Seth Onyango, Judith Kemei, Kirera Mwiti, Reuben Mwambingu and Hussein Salesa.
