The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has threatened to storm Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) offices if teachers are not paid by end of today. Kuppet secretary general Akello Misori called on their members to camp outside Knec offices across the country to pile pressure on the council to pay up.
“We call on Knec chairman George Magoha to put his house in order and start performing his duties as expected,” he said. “It is unfair that some teachers have been forced to resort to bank loans to pay school fees because of the negligence displayed by Knec officials,” added Misori. His counterpart from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Wilson Sossion, while backing Kuppet, said they would give a directive tomorrow.
“We are totally in support of the calls by our counterparts and Knut will advise their members on the way forward tomorrow,” said Sossion. “It is unrealistic that teachers who supervised and marked the 2015 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams have not been paid more than four months after the release of the results,” he said.
Kuppet chairman Omboko Milemba however blamed some officials in Knec of taking advantage of the change in management to delay payment of teachers who offered their services and in accordance with the laid down procedures. “Knec has failed to issue communication despite the numerous complaints launched by teachers and other professionals who managed the exams,” he said.
“The Treasury last year gave out Sh2 billion as examination registration fees for candidates in public primary and secondary schools. The council last year engaged the services of a total of 103,434 contracted professionals and 119,929 for KCPE and KCSE respectively who included supervisors, invigilators, security officers and drivers. The national examinations were conducted from October to November 2015.
