A Nairobi court yesterday ordered the locking up of two brothers and three government officials accused of approving the construction of the building that collapsed killing more than 20 people in Huruma Estate.
Milimani Principal magistrate Beatrice Mosiria allowed police to detain the suspects Samwel Kamau and Henry Muiruri who are said to own the building, Chrispas Ndinyo from the National Construction Authority (NCA), Justus Kathenge from Nairobi county government and Seline Ogallo employee of Mathare sub-county administration, at Pangani police station until this morning when she will rule on whether to extend detention to 21 days.
“The suspects are likely to be charged with either murder or manslaughter once investigations are complete,” said the senior State counsel Duncan Ondimu. He asked the court not to allow the suspects bond saying they were likely to abscond or interfere with jeopardise the ongoing investigations.
“Preliminary reports indicate the building was illegally on riparian land and was illegally occupied,” The prosecutor said. By yesterday, at least 130 people had been rescued from the rubble with a one-and-a-half-year-old girl found four days after the collapse.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the baby was found in a bucket wrapped in a blanket and appeared dehydrated but with no visible physical injuries. The father of the baby, who is alive, has been confirmed as Ralson Wasike.
