The government now says that recent al Shabaab attacks in Lamu are politically instigated even as it intensified air strikes in the vast Boni forest to flush out the militia holed up in the forest.
Coast Regional coordinator Nelson Marwa said the attacks were politically instigated with the aim of chasing away communities from the area so that they do not participate in the August 8 elections.
He said investigations shows that the attacks appear to be directed to people of a particular tribe. “Why have we seen the increase of the insurgence just a few months to the election and why are the attackers targeting people of a particular community, this is a clear indicator that they have planned by certain politicians,” said Marwa.
He spoke while addressing journalists at the School of Government where he briefed police bosses drawn from the region on the appointment of Fred Matiang’i as the acting Cabinet secretary for Interior and National Co-ordiation.
