Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has told off Deputy President William Ruto over alleged remarks describing hims as "illiterate" even as the county governor's race hots up.
The governor said Ruto should respect him and sell Jubilee's agenda instead of "wasting time discussing him” at rallies. Terming Mombasa his stronghold, Joho challenged Ruto to a political duel for the coastal county's top job. "I am challenging Ruto to a contest in Mombasa.
He cannot keep walking around disrespecting us. I am busy campaigning for Raila Odinga,” said the governor. Joho's remarks come after Ruto on Thursday challenged him to take advantage of the free secondary education plan by the Jubilee government to go back to school.
The DP also dismissed Joho’s claim that Mombasa port was being moved to Naivasha, saying the governor's argument was based on ignorance.
“Those claiming that the port is being moved to Naivasha are those who failed in school. What is being created in Naivasha is a free economic zone and not a port,” said Ruto.
Vowing to ensure President Uhuru and Ruto are not re-elected, Joho said he was busy campaigning for Raila and was not worried by Jubilee forays in the area.
Meanwhile, Senator Hassan Omar (Wiper) and Suleiman Shahbal (Jubilee) intensified campaigns to remove Joho from office. The two have been criss-crossing the county seeking support from residents.
Omar launched his campaign caravan on Thursday and has promised to send Joho home for failing to deliver meaningful development in the county.
Omar asked Joho to stop "side-shows" and "theatrics" which, he said, are aimed at diverting attention away from issue-oriented campaigns. Shahbal, who has been conducting door-to-door campaigns wooing voters, promises to transform the county.
